The Solar Electric Power Association has voted Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) as one of the top 10 utilities in the nation for the delivery of solar energy to its customers. According to an article written by Jim Kelly in KIUC's Currents publication, the addition of 800 customers increased the watts of solar by 167 per customer. "By the end of 2013, KIUC had nearly 20 megawatts of solar and 2,000 PV systems on its grid" said Kelly.
Outrigger Canoe racing has been a long and proud tradition in Hawai'i. One of the most beautiful places to witness such a great summer spectacle is on Kaua'i's Hanalei Bay on Saturdays. Regattas feature all ages and last all day long. I took these great photos of the Tai Hook 2014 Regatta in June.

Construction is currently underway on two 12 MW solar arrays in Anahola and Koloa. Both are owned by KIUC. Upon completion, the arrays will be some of the largest in all of Hawai'i. The $40 million array in Koloa is nearly complete and will meet 5.5 percent of Kaua'i's energy needs. 60-acres of land is currently being cleared in Anahola for the array that will be built there. The $54 million project is expected to be in operation by 2015 and will generate electricity at a cost of 12.5 cents per kilowatt-hour compared to bout 24 cents for electricity. Combined, both arrays will replace 3.4 million gallons of oil used annually on Kaua'i and by 2015 provide half of the islands daytime energy needs.
Pu'ukumu Charter School is a new independent school coming to the North Shore and will give parents another education option for their children. Based in Kilauea, Pu'ukumu will offer an education program "fully aligned with Common Core Standards and the American College Testing (ACT) College-Readiness Standards" for middle school and high school students. The school started in 2014 has one eighth grade class and will be adding a new class each year until grade 12.
