Construction is currently underway on two 12 MW solar arrays in Anahola and Koloa. Both are owned by KIUC. Upon completion, the arrays will be some of the largest in all of Hawai'i. The $40 million array in Koloa is nearly complete and will meet 5.5 percent of Kaua'i's energy needs. 60-acres of land is currently being cleared in Anahola for the array that will be built there. The $54 million project is expected to be in operation by 2015 and will generate electricity at a cost of 12.5 cents per kilowatt-hour compared to bout 24 cents for electricity. Combined, both arrays will replace 3.4 million gallons of oil used annually on Kaua'i and by 2015 provide half of the islands daytime energy needs.
