Nine new and modernized sirens were recently installed in the following locations: ‘Aliomanu Estates, Isenberg Park,  ‘Anini Beach, Kapa‘a High School, Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery, Lihu‘e ballpark, Lydgate Beach Park, Shipwreck Beach and Vidinha Stadium.  Older sirens are to be modernized on the island as well.

Sirens exist as part of Kauai's Civil Defense early warning system.  They are tested on the 1st of every month.  In the event that they do go off as a warning, stay calm, turn on the radio or the tv and follow the directions from county officials.

2014 YTD sales volume outpacing 2013 on entire Island of Kauai by almost 30%.

Pacific Business News recently confirmed that the Princeville Resort and it's 1,103 acres has been sold to Chinese investor, Reignwood International, a company owned by Billionaire Thai-Chinese businessman Chanchai Ruayrungruang. The sale includes the Prince Golf Course.

Summer is coming to a close and the swells of fall and winter are coming soon.  With that in mind, here are some great safety tips from Kauai Beach Explorer:

• Swim at lifeguarded beaches – ask lifeguards for safety and swimming tips.
• Lifeguards post warning signs – Don’t ignore them! Read them and heed them!
• Conditions constantly change – daily and seasonal changes must be monitored closely
• Waves come in sets – it can look calm for up to 20 minutes between dangerous sets of huge waves.
• Hazards can exist in ANY coastal area - not just in the water. Be careful on wet sand and rocks.
• Do not fight a rip current – if caught in a current keep calm, float, breathe, don’t panic, and wave for help. Go WITH the current and conserve energy.
• Use the buddy system – never swim alone & know your limits.
• When in doubt – don't go out!

Kolopua, a workforce housing complex, is currently under construction in Princeville.  Upon completion, there will be 44 units with 16 one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom and 12 three-bedroom rental apartments ranging from 745 to 1,128 square feet. Kolopua is expected to be completed by April 2015. These will be for rent only with a lottery for qualified applicants.

Congratulations to Nicole Chyr for winning this year's Kaua'i Marathon and becoming the first woman to win overall. Crossing the finish line with a time of 3 hours and 24 seconds, Chyr led her nearest competitor by nearly a minute. Congrats to her and the rest of the athletes! The sales volume for single family residences Island wide has risen 23% YTD from July 2013. We are starting to see some building again with building permit applications increasing.

A lot of people were wondering why there were so many canoes at Hanalei Pier this past weekend.  Namolokama o' Hanalei hosted their long distance canoe race.  The race is an open ocean race that started at at the pier and went down to the Kilauea lighthouse where the canoes then turned around and came back.  The women raced first and the men raced second.  This was the last 6 man canoe hosted on Kaua'i. Local teams will now focus on the larger events including: The Pailolo Challenge, Na Wahine 'o Ke Kai, and of course, the superbowl of paddling, Moloka'i Hoe.
