Mark your calendar for the 3rd annual Kaua'i Chocolate & Coffee Festival a celebration of all things chocolate and coffee with lots of sampling, educational displays and workshops, entertainment and exhibitor booths featuring a variety of chocolate and coffee products, from around the state.

The Kaua'i Chocolate & Coffee Festival spans over two days beginning on Friday morning with tours and workshops and continuing into the evening and then picks up again on Saturday morning and continues on to highlight all the attributes of these two favorite local crops. The street festival takes place in Historic Hanapepe Town and includes farm tours, informative classes, workshops/demonstrations, live entertainment, a chocolate & coffee pampering station, a silent auction, keiki activities, sampling and much more.

The event is FREE, however, should you wish to receive guaranteed samples of chocolate and coffee plus get a free reusable tote bag with special offers and discounts tickets are required.

Passports: $12 advance or $18 at the door, while supplies last. Tickets also available one week prior at Aloha Spice Company, Banana Patch Studio, Japanese Grandma's, Angela Headley Island Art and Kauai Fine Art.

Hui o Laka presents the 29th Annual Emalani Festival Kauai

This Saturday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lush expanse of the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Kokee State Park.  One of the island’s most popular and authentic Hawaiian cultural events, the Emalani Festival Kauai is a day of song, hula, history and pageantry, celebrating Hawaii’s beloved Queen Emma and recalling her journey to the Koke?e uplands and Kilohana vista in 1871. Queen Emma will enter the meadow on horseback at 11 a.m.  Exhibits, craft tables, silent auction, and a snack shop enhance the festival experience. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited. Bring your own blankets or chairs (no tents or coolers). Animals are not permitted in state parks. Admission is free and all are welcome to join in the festivities.

KIUC board of directors on Tuesday approved expenditures of up to $350,000 to conduct preliminary work for a project on the island's west side. According to a statement, the money will be used for preliminary surveying, engineering and permitting work for a proposed project that incorporates photovoltaic and pumped storage hydro technology.

KIUC has already started initial work on the project, installing gauging equipment and performing required diversion modifications. The investment follows an August decision by the utility's board to approve land lease and associated agreements with the state Department of Hawaiian Homelands and the Agribusiness Development Corp.

Should the project, which KIUC says could provide 15 percent of the island's energy needs, come to fruition, the utility will invest millions in infrastructure improvements and ongoing maintenance on publicly owned lands. They include, among others, the rehabilitation of the Puu Opae, Mana and Puu Lua reservoirs, as well as the repair and maintenance of the Kokee Ditch system.

“This partnership enables the state to provide proper stewardship for the river, while expanding agriculture, energy production and residential development on the west side,” KIUC Board Chair Allan Smith said in a statement.

KIUC said the pumped storage hydro project is will generate up to 25 megawatts of electricity, and reduce the utility’s carbon footprint by displacing 5 million gallons of diesel per year. An April decision by the Commission of Water Resources Management to restore appropriate stream flow in the Waimea River set the framework for KIUC's project.

The voyaging canoe, recently back home from its three-year Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, was greeted by hundreds on boats and boards, and watching from the Hanalei Pier. Even a pod of dolphins and a monk seal watched.

Moku Chandler paused as he tried to find the words to express his feelings about being a crew member of the Hokulea and the rousing welcome it received in Hanalei Bay on a spectacular Sunday morning.

Joy, love, forgiveness, caring for each other — all were expressed when Hokulea and sister canoe Hikianalia arrived for the first of its three-day stay on Kauai.

A crowd of keiki to kupuna filled the Hanalei Pier, where the canoes were docked, to watch a spirited, heartfelt ceremony that included hula, chants, blessings, lei and gifts.

Voyagers departed from Haleiwa, Oahu, Saturday and reached their destination after 12 hours of sailing through the night amid clear skies and steady tradewinds. Hokulea was captained by Kamaki Worthington, North Shore resident, while navigation student Koral McCarthy provided direction via traditional Polynesian way finding techniques.

Koral McCarthy who also coordinated arrival ceremonies and much of the week’s coming events.

The Kauai port stop and outreach events were planned by the Polynesian Voyaging Society and coordinated by local community members and supporters as part of the Mahalo, Hawaii Sail, an extension of the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage. The sail includes similar visits to every major Hawaiian island into 2018.

During the three-day Kauai engagement, crew members will participate with the community in activities that will highlight the recent Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage as well as the work being done within Kauai communities.

During a ceremony on the beach Sunday, Kauai’s Louise Sausen looked out at Hokulea floating at the end of the pier. She smiled and beamed with pride.

Kumu Leihi‘ilani Kirkpatrick brought halau members who were part of the opening ceremony. She spoke of unity, malama and aloha, all things that can be learned from Hokulea’s journey that took it 40,000 nautical miles and to about 150 ports worldwide. Crew members met with people around the globe.
