“May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii Nei.” 

The history behind this day comes from a man called Don Blanding, a writer and poet,
who first suggested that a holiday should be dedicated to the beautiful Hawaiian
tradition of making and wearing lei. But it was Grace Tower Warren, also a writer,
who came up with the idea that the holiday should coincide with May Day.
And so since the first Lei Day on May 1, 1928,
Hawaii has continued the annual celebration to this very day.

Start Hawai`i bicycle climbing season at the 9th annual Pedal to the Meadow hill race on Kaua`i.
Cycle from sea-level Kekaha up to Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke`e State Park. Come climb
over the hills and through the woods. Check out last year’s results, this year’s race details,
and plan to pedal to the meadow! Then stay for Sunday’s Mana Time Trial and the new
Cycle on the Strip Criterium at Kauai Raceway Park (a.k.a. the drag strip.)

Saturday, May 26 - About 100 cyclists will be on the road from Kekaha to Koke'e in the morning. 
Koke`e Road up to the intersection will be CLOSED 7:30 - 9:15 a.m., so please use 
Waimea Canyon Drive and be extra careful where the two roads meet and 
near the finish chute near the 16-mile marker / Meadow entrance.
Sunday, May 27 - Mana Time Trial bicycle race - Bicycles on Highway from MacArthur Beach Park 
in Kekaha out to Mana and back, 8 - 11 a.m. NO lane closures. 
Cyclists have the right to take the lane if the shoulder is hazardous...so please drive with aloha.

** Please drive/pass with extreme care, and allow 3-4 feet clearance from racers.
If you pass, watch for oncoming/ downhill vehicles... and never pass on a blind corner! **

Don't miss these Spring 2018 Performances on May 18 and 19, at 7:30PM in the ballroom of Aqua Kauai Beach Resort in Wailua.  You won’t want to miss these performances of “Carmina Burana”, Carl Orff’s most famous choral work, presented by Kauai Choral, and featuring accompaniments by KCC Instrumental Ensembles.  The piece has excited audiences around the world with its thrilling and constantly changing rhythms, dramatic, soaring solos, whimsical, mystical, and mischievous to serious moments. It offers challenges for the performers, as well, and Kauai Chorale is delighted to present this quintessential piece of choral music.
Kauai Chorale, under the direction of Lois Ricciardi and KCC Instrumental Ensembles, under the baton of Sarah Tochiki look forward to having you as our guests as we include a few other surprises, including a musical tribute to “New York, New York” – our “theme song” this semester, as nearly 50 of our members will be headed off to The Big Apple the week following our concerts on Kauai. 
And last, but certainly not least, these will be the final concerts under Lois Ricciardi’s direction.  With a very distinguished career of 30 years as musical director of the Chorale, she will be ending this semester’s concert season with the honor of having brought Kauai Chorale to the point of invitation to perform at Lincoln Center, as well as for so many wonderful seasons of Kauai concerts.

This concert was sparked by local musicians and community leaders who are passionate about spreading aloha and helping the people of Kaua‘i get back to normal life. Donavon Frankenreiter, a Kaua‘i resident and musician, called his friend Jack Johnson to help put on a benefit show for the community. Local promoter, BAMP Project, jumped on board to coordinate the event and several more musicians and local businesses have rallied together to host a night to raise money and lift the spirits of the locals who have been through so much. This storm will be remembered for years to come, not only for the damaging flood waters, but also for the way people have joined together to support the impacted families and communities. 

All net proceeds will go to the Kaua'i Relief & Recovery Fund at Hawai'i Community Foundation as well as other local organizations committed to flood relief.

Hope to Hanalei - This event is to support the Hanalei businesses because of the recent floods. First and foremost, The Hanalei Merchant Hop is a game. Participants check in at the Kauai North Shore Lions Club tent on the Hanalei Center lawn. Once registered, players are assigned a number and then told to go shopping.For every receipt players bring back to the Lions’ tent, they get a raffle ticket placed into a drawing with their number on it. Winners in the raffle drawings get gift cards to places like BarAcuda and Calypso Café, Hanalei Gourmet and Hanalei Surf Shop. In total, the Kauai North Shore Lions Club is investing $1,000 into gift cards for the event."The idea is to get people out going to different merchants and buying things,” LaFratta said. “We want them (Merchant Hop players) to share the love. 

Record-breaking rains hammered Kauai’s North Shore over the weekend of April 15, flooding businesses and homes in Hanalei. Landslides shut down access to Wainiha and Haena. A one-lane emergency access road was finally cleared April 28. However, public traffic is still shut down on Kuhio Highway past Hanalei. Many of the people who normally work at Hanalei’s businesses are trapped in Wainiha and Haena. North Shore Lions member Richard Teixeira said the goal is to prevent them from coming back to closed doors due to a low volume of business once the road reopens. “It is very important to help sustain a healthy commercial environment for the good of everyone,” Teixeira said.

The game applies to any kind of merchandise bought at Hanalei business including food and drink at restaurants, clothing and gear, and gifts and art. The Hanalei Merchant Hop game starts at noon Sunday and will run through 7 p.m.  Players don’t have to be present to collect prizes for the raffle, but participants must register with the Lions at their tent before beginning the game to play. This was a last-minute idea to get some life into this town and help some merchants out.

Beautiful, exotic orchids are the focus at this year’s annual Garden Island Orchid Society Spring Fantasy Show being held at the United Church of Christ in Hanapepe. Bring your cameras to the free orchid show and shop for orchid-themed crafts and orchid plants, see a demonstration on potting and repotting orchids, and enjoy food and beverages.

Hanalei School will be presenting their annual fundraiser, “Starry Nights”.
