What is Adopt-A-Highway?
Adopt-A-Highway is a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter along Hawaii's State highways. It's a way for environmentally conscious citizens to make a contribution to a cleaner State. In addition to a cleaner roadside, participants help to prevent pollutants from entering our storm drains, streams, and ocean.
Community groups, churches, businesses, or individuals help maintain sections of roadside within Hawaii's State Highway system. The Adopt-A-Highway program is a great way to promote civic responsibility, community pride, and camaraderie within organizations.
Litter is unsightly and expensive. It destroys the natural beauty of Hawaii’s highways. The State Department of Transportation spends $2 million a year picking up litter — and that doesn’t count what the counties and other state agencies spend!
Beautiful highways say “welcome” to visitors and show that we care about our community and our environment.
Reside Kauai adopted the 2 miles between Lumahai and Wainiha point and Agents Brysone Nishimoto, Mahana Dunn and Principal Broker Paul Pacuilla participated in the highway cleanup in August.
