On Saturday, onlookers at Kalapaki beach witnessed the end to a long sailing canoe race, the Na Holo Kai. Starting at Hale'iwa on O'ahu, crews embarked on a 90 mile race that brings them all the way to Kalapaki beach here on Kaua'i. The experience is one of a kind. According to one competitor, "This race is the hardest canoe race I've ever done...your body wants to gives out after 3 hours of paddling but your mind keeps you going. That's why only the top paddlers in all of Hawai'i are invited into the crews because they can handle that sort of endurance." Steeped in tradition, this race pays homage to the ancient Hawaiians way of life where traditional canoes played a major role in everyday life.
