" I just caught an Ahi"
These are the words you will often here when you answer the phone on Kauai. A wonderful part of the Island lifestyle is that you are surrounded by fish and people who love to catch them. While I am not a fisherman a few of my friends are and when they hook up they usually hook up the neighborhood with fresh caught Island fish. Typically the first day we will shave off some sashimi while it is super fresh and than cook it up the next day or two into stir frys, tacos and whatever else sounds and tastes great. Visitors often comment that food is expensive on Kauai and with $7. gallons of milk I hear them.
Vacationing and living are two different dynamics and as you ease into the Island lifestye as a resident some of the treats of the Island become available. My neighbor has a great lime tree which I have now 2 growing from seed in my yard both are about 4 feet high. My yard has avocados that are very creamy and tasty and so are the apple bananas, we can never eat everything at the time it is ripe so we share with the neighbors as they do with us. A couple of my neighbors have laying hens now so we are enjoying eggs from the Rhode Island Reds.
