Following a May 8 assessment of the slope adjacent to Kuhio Highway (Route 560) at mile marker 1, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises the public that the Lihue bound lane of the highway will remain closed as crews work to stabilize the upper and lower slopes. The plan for the slope stabilization includes scaling, soil nail installation, and Tecco mesh and shotcrete reinforcement. The Lihue bound lane of Kuhio Highway will remain closed for the duration of the slope stabilization, which is expected to take between four to five months to complete. Traffic will be allowed in both directions with alternating traffic control except for when rock scaling is scheduled on the upper slope. During rock scaling, crews will temporarily stop traffic for 30-45 minutes as they knock loose material down and clean the road. Then motorists will be directed through the closure one direction at a time. Rock scaling operations will not take place during the lower slope work. Please be advised that the highway in this location will be limited to one lane 24-hours a day until the stabilization is completed for the safety of passing motorists. We are aware of scheduled events in the area including the HCRA State Championship Race in August and will coordinate access and traffic control with the county and other stakeholders.The public is asked to avoid the area if possible and to treat the traffic control personnel with courtesy.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn and play konane – Hawaiian Checkers, make a lei, and learn about lauhala, pounding poi and more. Shop in the Crafter’s Tent where all of the vendors are local and their products are made on Kaua’i. Sample the food of Hawai’i, it’s a must to try lau lau, lomi lomi salmon and more. Support our event by bidding on an item at the Silent Auction, and see what our community groups are doing to make Kaua’i a better place. This is not a fundraiser as all monies donated and raised that day are used to perpetuate this great event. 

The Kalaheo School Drama club has entertained residents and visitors for many years with their amazing performances of live musical theater. This year, the talented kids of Kalaheo School present the colorful musical Mulan Jr. at the Kalaheo School Cafeteria. This family-friendly event will open on April 26th and run for two weekends. This Easter Weekend April 20th & 21st one of the longest-running surfboard contests in the world will be held in Hanalei, the 40th Pinetrees Longboard Classic. This event continues the tradition of bringing together contestants young and old for a fun event that is enjoyed by all. The weather forecast looks good for this weekend. This free “talk story” series – designed to bring the community together to honor our past through stories from kupuna and historians, celebrating the rich history and cultural traditions of life in Kilauea and across the North Shore of Kauai. Sunday April 14th with Chipper Wichman at the Porter Pavilion. Come talk story with Chipper Wichman–local boy, conservationist, educator, and President of National Tropical Botanical Gardens as he talks about “Ha’ena: He’aina Momona–the Bountiful Land”. Chipper, an avid and mesmerizing storyteller weaves together the history of Ha’ena, the impacts of last April’s flood and the effects of a modern-day problem: people are loving the place to death.
